Clues to the Past

The large ridge of loose rock is called a lateral moraine. It was created by the glacier as it flowed down the valley. The top of the moraine marks the glacier’s maximum height.
Since 1885 the Athabasca Glacier has lost more than 60% of its volume. That’s over 350 million cubic metres of ice.
