Pulau Wayag

Pulau Wayag

Pulau Wayag probably has one of the best views of mountains and beaches that exist around the world. The colors are amazing with blue and, turquoise water, white clouds, green vegetation/jungle and grey & black stones/mountains. We saw photos from other visitors before we left and it looked great, but seeing it in reality was even more amazing. It is a tough climb to reach the top, but it is definitely worth it. The boat ride from the inhabit islands of Raja Ampat is about 2-3 hours, thus you need a complete day for the tour.

Prambanan built to honor lord Shiva

A temple was first built at the site around 850 CE by either Rakai Pikatan or Balitung Maha Sambu the Sanjaya king of the Mataram Kingdom. According to Shivagrha inscription that wrote chandrasengkala ”Walung gunung sang wiku” (778 Saka/856 M), the temple was built to honor lord Shiva and the original name of the temple is Shiva-grha (the house of Shiva).

Indeed, some archaeologists propose that the idol of Shiva in the garbhagriha (central chamber) of the main temple is modelled after King Balitung, serving as a depiction of his deified self after death.

Clues to the Past

The large ridge of loose rock is called a lateral moraine. It was created by the glacier as it flowed down the valley. The top of the moraine marks the glacier’s maximum height.
Since 1885 the Athabasca Glacier has lost more than 60% of its volume. That’s over 350 million cubic metres of ice.

On the top of Tangkuban Perahu mountain

On a reasonably clear day, from Tangkuban Perahu, we can see not only the mountain range to the east, with Mt. Bukittunggul as its highest peak (2,209 m), but also two other in a northeasterly direction. The lower and nearer one is Mt. Tampomas (1,684 m) just north of Sumedang some 40 km away.

To the right and about 90 km away is Mt. Ciremai close to Cirebon on the north coast. At 3,078 m, Mt. Ciremai is West Java’s tallest mountain. At the foot of Mt. Tangkuban Perahu we see the Ciater tea plantation covering the rolling hills. Farther to the left are the northern coastal plains of Java, and on an extremely clear day we may even be able to see the Java Sea beyond.
